Sherie, Waterloo, Iowa "I owe a huge thank you to Dr. Glascock and his staff. My life has changed dramatically since having surgery in June 2003. I’m now able to enjoy long walks, shopping and riding amusement rides with my family. My attitude and outlook on life are much better than I could ever imagine. | | | | Sherie before and after | |
| | | | Katie, Cedar Falls, Iowa After surgery, I went from 325 pounds to 185 and am now leading a life I never had. This summer I was a camp counselor. I played soccer, canoed and was able to keep up with the kids. Obese since age six, these are activities I have always wanted to do, but avoided because of my weight. I feel like a kid again at age 21! | | |

| | | | Shannon, Belmond I am now 8 months post op and down 139 pounds with 75 to go to hit goal. It is and can be a struggle some days with the ’head hunger.’ I find myself walking in circles in the kitchen arguing with myself over getting something to eat…my mind says yes and my stomach says no…so it is an ongoing struggle and battle of wills. I have to work at it every day and still feel insecure about myself, but know that this is from years of hiding behind the fat and sheltering myself from cruel remarks and actions toward me. It will probably take years to really get over that to a degree that I can feel good about myself 100 percent, but I am working on it and do know that I am making some progress in looking at me. Some days I wonder why I can’t see the changes that others are telling me about. Other days I am dancing and laughing while I try on a new dress size. My life has been blessed and given back to me through this surgery and I would do it again in a heartbeat. My son can now wrap his arms around me and hold his hands together. He thinks that is pretty special since he has never been able to do that in his life (he is 11 years old). Today at his Special Olympics event he ran up to me and grabbed me and nearly knocked me off my feet, something that would never have happened a year ago since I was like a two ton Mac truck. |
| | | | Vicky, Waverly, Iowa One year and 100 pounds later, my journey continues. Dr Glascock & his wonderful staff have been with me all the way and have given me the tools to make the changes in my life. No more acid reflux, pain in my joints, shortness of breath, or hating to see my own reflection. Today, I work out 6 to 7 times a week, enjoy shopping for clothes (I went from size 26 to size 6) and feel good about myself. The things I have learned over the past year will allow me to continue to feel good and live my life to the fullest. For those who can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, I am here to say, there is one. Take charge, start your journey, and I will see you somewhere down the road. | | |

| | | | Dr. Kirkle, Cedar Falls, Iowa I started with severe sleep apnea, painful joints, psoriasis, gastric reflux and diabetes with a BMI of 44. At three months after my surgery I was down 76 pounds to a BMI of 33 and every single one of my health problems were gone. Now at seven months post op I am down 100 pound to a BMI of 29.7 and able to drive again! This surgery has given me the freedom to get out and be active and live a healthier lifestyle. I would like to commend the staff at Sartori Hospital for the excellent care given to me while I was undergoing evaluation and bariatric surgery. Dr. Glascock and his staff, the Sartori staff from PAT, admissions, lab, x-ray, the ASU, surgical unit and the third floor nursing staff were all the epitome of the Covenant Health System model of compassionate people and exceptional care. It is always good for a physician to be a patient occasionally to remind him what it is like to be a patient. The worry, the pain, the uncertainty. This helps the physician to be more compassionate and empathetic towards his own patients. The Sartori staff helped alleviate all of mine and my wife’s concerns during our preop visits and postop care, making us as comfortable as possible. Sartori and the Midwest Institute of Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery should be commended for having such a caring and well trained staff. | | |

| | | | Dixie, Tripoli, Iowa This weekend I spent a lot of time thinking about the changes I have experienced since my surgery. What I am thankful for at 7 weeks post-op:- That a very skilled surgeon chose to open a practice in Cedar Falls and his office personnel are very friendly, helpful, and know what they are doing.
- That my insurance company was willing to pay for my surgery and I didn’t have to fight them for it.
- That Dr. Glascock requires extensive testing. Finding a tumor and getting a hysterectomy was a big blow but I know that it made my recovery much easier.
- That my family and friends have all been very supportive both before and after my surgery.
- This surgery resulted in 7 small scars. They are very minor. Four of them look like small scratches and will probably disappear completely.
- That my small stomach is my friend. For the most part we get along very well. It does rebel when I eat too much, too fast, or the wrong things. It was very noisy at first but has calmed down considerably and does not embarrass me in public like I was afraid it would.
- I suffered from serious stress incontinence for many years. The tumor that was removed at the time of the hysterectomy apparently attributed to this. The hysterectomy went a long way to correct the problem but my recent weight loss has made it even better. For the first time in over 25 years I can do things and go places without the fear of an accident.
- That I am not hungry. I have to remind myself to eat. Before the surgery I was always hungry.
- That at almost 7 weeks I have lost around 50 pounds, resulting in going down at least one clothing size. More importantly, that weight loss has made me feel so good. I can now climb stairs without getting winded. I can feed calves without having to stop to rest. My knees don’t hurt as much. I sleep better. I can go shopping and not get discouraged because I have to walk so much. I no longer pull into a parking lot and turn around because I don’t have the energy to go into the store. I can now exercise so that my weight will drop even faster and I am actually enjoying it!
- My husband of 32 years is looking at me much like he did during the first years of our marriage. He enjoys the changes in my body almost as much as I. He encourages me when I get down and enjoys pointing out the changes in my body. Right now, my wedding ring is still too tight but very soon I will be wearing it again.
- I am thankful that because of this surgery I can anticipate living to see my children become parents and that I will be able to hold the babies on my lap, get down on the floor to play with them, run around with them outside, and eventually attend their graduations and weddings without embarrassing them because of my obesity.
- I am thankful that as a result of my surgery my attitude about myself has changed for the better. I know I am a valuable member of society and soon I no longer will have to fear people are judging me because of my size. I won’t be hiding behind a covering of fat.
- Lastly, at least for now, I am thankful for the people I have met and have made friends with because of making the decision to have surgery. My online friends have been so very supportive and encouraging. I can’t thank them all enough.

| | | | Michelle Dr. Matt (Glascock) has changed by life. I was 292 pounds when I had my surgery. My life consisted of getting up, going to work, and in bed by 7:30 p.m. With 2 children ages 2 and 5, they had no mom, and my husband had no wife. Since my surgery in February, I am able to do whatever I want. My kids and I go for bike rides (which I had not done in 6 or 7 years), for walks and go swimming, you would not have caught me in a bathing suit in 7 years either. We have so much fun now. Instead of bed at 7:30 p.m., we are outside until 9 or 9:30. The best thing that has happened to me yet is my oldest said just last weekend, mom you are getting so skinny, my hands touch now when I give you a hug. I started crying. Thank you, Dr. Matt (Glascock) and of course his staff for changing everything in my life. If it was not for him and his staff, I would not have ever known what I was missing out on with my kids. | | |

| | | | Cindy, Waterloo, Iowa Today is my 4 month anniversary. I stepped on the scale this morning, and I have lost 69 pounds. I have 51 to go to my personal goal. I decided to break into my ’I’ll probably never get to wear these again one day’ box of clothes and grabbed a ten year old pair of much loved Lee Jeans, size 12. Much to my delight and surprise they slipped right on, and zipped up nicely with only a little ’overhang’ from loosening skin on my tummy. If you lived within a 3 block area from my house, yes, it was me whooping and hollering with joy! Thank you Dr. Glascock. You gave me the best gift. There was someone under all that fat and you let her out. | | |
 | Cindy went from a size 22-24 (left) to a size 12 (right) in four months! | |
| | | | Sharon, Waterloo, Iowa Here is something that happened to me this weekend that people who have never been overweight would not understand. My husband and I went for a bike ride Saturday and I took a corner too short and tipped over on the bike. No big ouches, but in the very recent past, my biggest fear would be how to get up. It was never easy or even slightly gracious to see me try to get up from a ’down position.’ Well I have to say, I sat there a few seconds and thought I would be reliving the past…but I got up without a problem! That is huge for me! My husband kept asking, ’Are you OK?’ and I just kept saying, ’I got up! I got up!’ |
| | | | Marti, Denver, Iowa I have been overweight almost all of my life. This surgery has changed my life. I’m losing weight, have more energy and have a better self image. |
